Cutting your lawn too short late in the season can weaken the grass and leave it vulnerable to winter frost.

  1. Clear any fallen leaves and twigs from the lawn before you begin.
  2. Adjust your lawnmower wheels or blades to a high setting, aiming to keep the grass at least five centimeters tall.
  3. Mow the lawn on a dry afternoon when the grass is free of dew.
  4. Empty the mower clippings into your compost bin to prevent them from smothering the turf.

Why it works

Taller grass blades have more surface area to capture the limited autumn sunlight, which helps the plants store energy. The extra length also acts as an insulating blanket, protecting the crown of the grass and the roots from freezing winter temperatures.
