Stop Watering Houseplants on a Fixed Schedule

As autumn days shorten, keeping your houseplants on their frequent summer watering routine can easily drown their roots.

  1. Push your index finger about two inches deep into the houseplant's potting mix.
  2. Feel for moisture, and if the soil at that depth still feels damp, do not add any water today.
  3. Check the drainage saucer beneath the pot and empty any pooled water immediately.
  4. Wait a few days and test the soil moisture again before you lift the watering can.

Why it works

In autumn, houseplants receive less sunlight, which slows down their growth. Because they are not growing actively, they use much less water, and excess moisture left in the soil will starve the roots of oxygen and cause rot.
