Relocate Leafy Greens to Shield Them from Sun

As the weather warms up over the coming weeks, intense midday light can cause delicate leafy vegetables in containers to turn bitter and bolt.

  1. Identify potted containers growing crops like spinach, lettuce, or rocket.
  2. Lift or wheel the pots to a new spot that receives direct morning sunlight but gets shade after midday.
  3. Place them near a tall fence, wall, or under the canopy of a larger plant.
  4. Check that the new location still allows easy access for daily watering.

Why it works

Leafy greens thrive in soft light, but strong afternoon sun heats container soil rapidly and signals the plant to produce flowers and seeds. Shading pots during the hottest hours keeps the root zone cooler, delaying seed stalk production and keeping leaves tender and sweet.
