Erect Shade for Spring Greens

Mid-spring often brings sudden hot days that can cause your tender leafy greens to wilt or go to seed prematurely.

  1. Identify garden beds containing sensitive greens like spinach, lettuce, or rocket.
  2. Push flexible bamboo canes or garden hoops into the soil on either side of the row to form low arches.
  3. Drape a lightweight, light-colored shade cloth or a thin bedsheet over the arches.
  4. Secure the fabric to the hoops using garden clips, clothes pegs, or binder clips.
  5. Weigh down the bottom edges of the fabric with bricks or heavy stones to prevent the wind from lifting it.

Why it works

Leafy greens thrive in cool weather and can quickly turn bitter or bolt, which means they produce flowers and seeds, when hit by sudden heat spikes. Providing temporary shade filters the intense midday sun and lowers the temperature around the leaves, keeping the soil cool and extending your harvest window.
