Check Soil Moisture Under Eaves
Evergreen shrubs planted close to house walls can dry out in autumn because roof eaves block the rain.

Walk around your house walls to identify evergreen shrubs growing close to the building.
Push your index finger 5cm into the soil at the base of the shrub.
Check if the soil feels completely dry beneath the surface.
Water the soil deeply with a watering can if it feels dry to the touch.
Add a layer of bark mulch around the base to help hold in moisture.
Why it works
Deep roof eaves act like an umbrella, casting a rain shadow that prevents natural rainfall from reaching the soil below. Evergreen leaves keep growing and losing moisture through autumn, so the roots can suffer severe drought stress even during wet weather if they are not watered manually.

New Protective Fabric Dramatically Boosts Strawberry Yields
