Secure the spade by placing the handle on the ground and holding the blade steady against a sturdy outdoor table or step.
Find the beveled, angled edge on the front side of the spade blade.
Push a flat metal file firmly across this angled edge, moving away from your body.
Repeat this single-direction stroke about ten times until you see clean, bright metal.
Why it works
A sharp, filed edge allows your spade to slice cleanly through tough autumn soil and fibrous plant roots rather than tearing them. This reduces the physical effort required to dig planting holes and helps prevent hand fatigue.
