Check Weeds for Seed Heads
In late summer, weeds are rushing to produce seeds that will sprout and crowd your garden next spring.

Walk through your garden beds and look at the tops of any visible weeds.
Identify weeds that have developed flowers, seed pods, or fluffy seed clusters.
Carefully snip off these seed heads using garden scissors.
Drop the seed heads directly into a bag or bucket without shaking them.
Throw the seed heads in the trash rather than your compost bin to prevent them from spreading later.
Why it works
A single weed can produce thousands of seeds at the end of the season. Removing the seed heads before they mature and drop stops the next generation of weeds from taking over your soil.
