Cusick's Pincushion

Chaenactis cusickii

Cusick's Pincushion

Meet a rare, pint-sized wildflower that brings the unique beauty of volcanic ash soils to your outdoor space.

Cusick's Pincushion is a tiny, rare annual herb that grows naturally in the volcanic ash soils of eastern Oregon and Idaho. Because it stays very low to the ground, reaching a mature height of only five to fifteen centimeters, this outdoor plant fits best at the very front of dry garden beds. Its small, white-to-pinkish flower heads look just like miniature sewing cushions nestled in the soil.

Growing this wildflower is a challenge that requires an expert hand, as it needs full sun and very little water. It is highly drought-tolerant and grows quickly from seed, completing its entire life cycle in a single season. You will need to provide excellent drainage to mimic its dry, volcanic home.

Despite its demanding care needs, this delicate plant is a wonderful choice for supporting local pollinators. Its unique spring blooms are highly attractive to bees, bringing helpful activity to your yard. It is also completely non-toxic to both humans and pets.
