Water Deeply and Less Often for Stronger Roots
Giving your garden a thorough soak less frequently builds stronger, more resilient plants over the coming weeks.

Check the soil moisture by inserting your finger a few inches deep into the earth.
If the top layer feels dry, direct water at the base of the plant using a slow, steady stream.
Keep watering the same spot until the moisture penetrates deeply into the root zone rather than just wetting the surface.
Wait until the top layer of soil dries out again before giving the area another deep drink.
Why it works
Light, frequent watering encourages roots to stay near the soil surface, where they dry out quickly in warm weather. Soaking the ground deeply prompts roots to grow down into cooler, damp soil layers, making the plant far better able to handle hot days.

Gene editing creates disease resistant cacao plants to secure global chocolate supply
Penn State researchers modified a single cacao gene that normally limits a plant's immune system. This tweak boosts natural defenses against devastating fungal diseases without needing foreign DNA. Healthy cacao plants help smallholder farmers harvest reliable crops despite changing climate conditions.
