Shave Autumn Weeds at the Surface
Spending just five minutes cutting down fast-growing autumn weeds now stops them from dropping seeds that will clutter your spring garden.

Walk through your garden beds to find patches of soft green annual weeds.
Place the flat blade of a garden hoe directly onto the soil surface.
Slide the blade forward or backward in a shallow sweeping motion to slice the weeds right at the soil line.
Leave the severed roots to rot in the ground.
Collect the loose weed tops and throw them away before they can mature.
Why it works
Annual weeds die completely at the end of the season and can only return if they drop seeds. Slicing them at the soil line kills them instantly without digging, which keeps dormant weed seeds buried deep in the dark where they cannot grow.

Researchers found that the upper and lower surfaces of oak leaves create two fundamentally different environments for microscopic life. The top side endures direct sun and wind, while the shaded bottom side stays humid and interacts closely with the plant. This shows that individual leaves contain separate microhabitats that respond differently to seasonal changes.
