Lilly-pilly

Syzygium smithii

Lilly-pilly

If you want a lush, fast-growing hedge that feeds the local wildlife, the Lilly-pilly is hard to beat.

The Lilly-pilly is an evergreen tree from eastern Australia that makes an exceptional hedge or privacy screen. It fills out with dense, glossy green leaves, accented by eye-catching pink or bronze new growth. Sitting comfortably in full sun or partial shade, it reaches anywhere from three to eight meters tall.

Growing this plant is delightfully easy for beginners because it tolerates heavy trimming and handles dry spells well. It needs only moderate watering once established and grows very quickly. You can easily raise new plants using seeds or cuttings.

In the summer, fluffy cream-white flowers bloom across the branches, attracting bees, birds, and butterflies. These blossoms turn into edible pink or magenta berries that bring bright color and extra life to your yard.
