You might think you know the humble dandelion, but this European relative brings a unique look to the garden.
The dark-bracted dandelion is a perennial herb that thrives in grassy areas and open, disturbed ground. Growing up to about a third of a meter tall, it fits naturally alongside garden grasses. Its spring blooms feature distinctive dark, purplish bracts, which are the small leaflike parts just beneath the flower head.
This fast-growing plant is incredibly easy to care for and tolerates dry spells well. It thrives in either full sun or partial shade and needs only moderate watering to stay healthy. Because it propagates by seed, it will easily find a home in your outdoor garden spaces.
Beyond its hardy nature, almost the entire plant is highly useful. The leaves, roots, and bright spring flowers are all edible, and they are completely safe for both humans and pets. Even better, these early blossoms are excellent for attracting friendly bees and butterflies to your yard.
